Definition of SMEs in Latin America: A review of the state of the art

Resumen

(English) This article presents the results of the review of the concept and classification of SMEs, by analyzing the state of the art of the past 6 years, the definitions applied in the countries of Central and South America and other international organizations. It was a powerful analytical documentary research, whose purpose was to reflect on the definition of this business category. The results suggest using the criteria: number of employees and turnover. These criteria, future research could be applied to uniform ranges all the American countries, minimizing the potential barriers to promotion policies and existing funding, regardless of sector or country to which they belong.

(Castellano) Se presenta el resultado de la revisión del concepto y la clasificación de PYME, a partir del análisis del estado del arte de los últimos 6 años, las definiciones aplicadas en los países del Centro y Sur de América y en distintos Organismos Internacionales. Una investigación documental de alcance analítico, cuyo propósito fue reflexionar sobre la definición de esta categoría empresarial. Los resultados sugieren utilizar los criterios: número de empleados y volumen de ventas. A estos criterios, en futuros estudios, se podrían aplicar rangos uniformes para todos los países americanos, minimizando posibles barreras a las políticas de promoción y financiamiento, independientemente del sector o País al cual pertenecen.
